Wimbledon clowns

Wimbledon has written one of the worst pages of its Open history by excluding all tennis players from Russia and Belarus from the next edition: hence Medvedev, Rublev, Sabalenka, etc. This is an immoral, illegal and also stupid sanction. An immoral, illegal and also stupid sanction, because in tennis, except for the Davis Cup, everyone only represents themselves, to the point that many do not even know the nationality of players they have seen a thousand times: we are sure that not everyone would guess the nationality of Zverev, Ruud, Auger-Aliassime, De Minaur, Davidovich-Fokina, Bublik and Korda at the first shot. And even this rhetoric of recent years about Italians is more the product of editorial marketing than nationalism: if Draghi decided to invade Switzerland, why would they sanction Sinner?

However, this is not the point, the point is that, in order to put pressure on Putin, one or more years of the careers of sportsmen are being ruined who will never be able to get them back, just on the basis of their passport. But one thing is a political decision by Boris Johnson, who has the mandate to make political decisions, another is Wimbledon’s surrender to guerrilla correctness, as if the organisers of the world’s most important tournament had certainties that not even geopolitical experts have. Sure they may have had pressure from their government, but it’s not like they live in Putin’s Russia….

Punished on the basis of certainties and not ‘rumours’, any US or British tennis player should be expelled from Wimbledon, given the 200,000 Iraqi civilians who died in the 2003 bombings under the pretext of preventing the use of non-existent weapons of mass destruction. To the point that 12 years later Blair apologised, Bush son (the real, or rather super-true, father) we do not remember. However, Henman and Roddick played at Wimbledon 2003, and well too. Maybe they were also against the bombing, nobody ever asked them.

    Sinner o Coppa Davis?
