Fognini-Thiem, prediction and betting tips

Who is the more declining player between Fabio Fognini and Dominic Thiem? A cruel question for two of our best-loved players, who meet today at 7pm in the Rome Masters 1000 at a different time in their careers: the 35-year-old Fognini is in honourable decline, but beats everyone he can beat (it was also seen in Belgrade), while the problems of the 29-year-old Thiem are mainly physical, after the operation and the long absence. 

We believe that Thiem, who has lost his mind after the dramatic triumph at the US Open 2020, still has a lot of desire, but what we saw in Madrid against Murray is certainly a player who is far from his best condition, which he needs to play his tennis on the limit and without a net, as well as without a plan B (which is a myth, given that only Djokovic, Nadal and very few others have it). 

That’s why we think that a fresh Fognini on a surface like the Foro Italico will be favoured both in a full-strength match and in a more tactical one. We are therefore betting 80 euros on Fognini at 1.64 to win 51.2 (or lose 80).

Una domanda crudele per due dei nostri giocatori più amati, che oggi alle 19 nel Masters 1000 di Roma si incontrano in un momento diverso della loro carriera: il trentacinquenne Fognini è in onorevole declino, ma batte tutti quelli che può battere (si è visto anche a Belgrado), mentre i problemi del ventinovenne Thiem sono soprattutto fisici, dopo l’operazione e la lunga assenza.

Crediamo che Thiem, calato di testa dopo il drammatico trionfo agli US Open 2020, abbia ancora molta voglia ma certo quello che abbiamo visto a a Madrid contro Murray è un giocatore lontanissimo dalla migliore condizione, a lui necessaria per giocare il suo tennis al limite e senza rete, oltre che senza piano B (che è un mito, visto che ce l’hanno solo Djokovic, Nadal e pochissimi altri).

Per questo pensiamo che un Fognini fresco, senza turni e cattivi riposi alle spalle, su una superficie come quella del Foro Italico parta favorito sia in una partita a tutto braccio sia in una più tattica. Puntiamo quindi 80 euro su Fognini a 1,64, per vincerne 51,2 (o perderne 80).
